Increasingly more aspects of our lives are connected to the internet, thanks to computers, gaming systems, household assistants, home robots, TVs, tablets, smartphones and wearables. Internet of Things (IoT) devices can exchange or share data from those devices over the internet to other devices or systems.

IoT devices make it easier to connect to the world however they can track and collect personal information – information about us, such as our activities, behaviors and interests, as well as contacts, photos, texts, videos, location, health information, and financial information. Below are some important steps consumers can take to protect themselves when using IoT devices and providing personal information.

  1. Share less online.
  2. Periodically review privacy settings on applications used.
  3. Review and opt-out of unnecessary third-party application connections.
  4. Use encryption to secure data.
  5. Delete unused mobile apps and extensions.
  6. Browse online using a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN).

It is important for consumers to understand how their data is collected, used and shared to make informed decisions about data sharing and the risks associated with it.
